A former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday in Lagos met with a former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, towards bringing the latter into the Action Congress.
The meeting, which was said to have held at Abubakar‘s residence in Lagos, according to a source, was also aimed at handing over the leadership of the AC in Rivers State to Sekibo.
The source, who was privy to the meeting, told our correspondent that Sekibo had been in talks with leaders of the AC in the past few months, towards taking over the leadership of the party in the state.
He said that the meeting has intensified since the governorship candidate of the AC in the state, Mr. Tonye Princewil, decided to withdraw his petition against the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.
The source said, ”Sekibo has been holding talks with Atiku and other AC bigwigs like Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Dubem Onyia and others as part of the plot to take over AC in Rivers State and then use that platform to fight the new government of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
At the Sunday meeting, like the previous other meetings, Sekibo laboured vigorously on the need for the AC national leadership to hand over the AC machinery in Rivers State to him, after he has moved over to the party.
Sekibo had promised a massive injection of funds into AC both in Rivers State and nationally, by him and his allies”
The source further said that Sekibo was working closely on the new project with the deposed governor of the state, Sir Celestine Omehia.
He further said that at the Sunday meeting were the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahadeen Asari Dokuboh, both of whom came in midway into the meeting.
The source said, ”Sekibo and his allies want Princewill, to be suspended or even expelled from the party. And they are using Princewill‘s withdrawal of his petition against the PDP at the elections petition tribunal and his desire to work with Amaechi, as the reason Princewill should be kicked out of the party.
The plan is to have Princewill kicked out by the party‘s national leadership and for the party in Rivers State to be handed over to Sekibo and his group”
Contacted on the matter, Omehia‘s former Commissioner of Information, Mr. Emmanuel Okah, said that the deposed governor was not planning to leave the PDP or work against Amaechi, since he remained a loyal party man.
He also said that Omehia had nothing against Princewill ”who he considers an asset to the PDP.”
He said, ”The former Governor has no intention of leaving the PDP or for the purpose of undermining Amaechi or Princewill. Princewill is an asset to the PDP not a liability. Omehia will remain a strong PDP member and has no intention of changing it”
But the Spokesman of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Garba Shehu, confirmed that Abubakar and Sekibo met last month.
He said he was not sure if they met in Lagos on Sunday.
”I was in Kano when the former Vice-President was in Lagos. I did not know if they met . But they met last month but I did not know what they discussed. Sekibo came like any other visitor and he left”, he said
Also contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the AC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said he was not aware of any meeting between Abubakar and Sekibo in recent times.
However, efforts to get Sekibo‘s comments were futile.
Several calls made by our correspondent to his mobile phone was not answered.
A text message sent to his phone was not replied either.
