One person died Sunday in a car accident involving the convoy of Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua in the federal capital Abuja but Yar’Adua himself was unhurt, a presidential spokesman said.
The accident happened as Yar’Adua was returning from a trip to the US where he met President George W. Bush, spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said.
Adeniyi said the car in which Yar’Adua was travelling was not affected by the accident.
The incident happened when the tyre came off a Mercedes Benz vehicle conveying five of the president’s security detail as Yar’Adua’s 12-car convoy made its way back into town from the aiport.
One of the security men, the driver, Suleiman Adebayo was killed and his four colleagues and passengers were injured and are now receiving treatment, the spokesman said.
